In addition to the provided graphical schematic, here is a parts list, advice and maybe some indications on where to get better/cheaper parts for your effect. ********************************************************** Project: Fuzz Face Build Difficulty: Experienced The circuit of the germanium fuzz face is in itself very simple, however the secret of this box is in the correct combination of transistor hFe values and resistance. What i recommend is purchasing the pre-tested set of transistors from Small bear electronics (see bottom of document for URL) wich comes with a handy list of resistor values you can substitute the "standard" values i provide you with. ********************************************************** PARTS: Resistors 1 - 33k 1 - 8.2k 1 - 470 ohm 1 - 100k Potentiometers 1 - 1k linear 1 - 500k log (audio) Capacitors 1 - 2.2uF 1 - 22uF 1 - 0.1uF Transistors For Q1 and Q2, NKT275 or other good germanium transistor of the PnP Configuration. JD Sleep (www.generalguitargadgets.com) recommends these other substitutions: NKT275 AC128 2N508A 2N527 NTE158 NTE126 Other 1 - Hammond 1590BB Alluminium Enclosure 1 - Switchcraft Mono 1/4" Jack 1 - Switchcraft Stereo 1/4" Jack 1 - Carling DPDT Heavy duty Stomp switch 1 - 9v Battery snap (try to get the hard plastic type, the others seem to break off after a few changes). 1 - Perfboard.a small sized one like at small bear's catalog is enough. 2 - Knob (buy according to the shaft width of the potentiometer you bought) ? - Wire. 22AWG, solid core makes for easier soldering, buy colors! 1 - Soldering Iron, 20-50w, try to get a "needle" tip. ? - Solder, rosin core, a small "tube" coil is enough for a box. *********************************************************** Random Tips: The enclosure. Probably the hardest part about building the box, is getting a durable, good looking finish on your enclosure. on Hammond Alluminium enclosures, i proceed as follows: - Sand box with fine 400-800 grit sandpaper until smooth - clean box with acetone throughly - slightly heat box with a hair dryer - spray 4-5 coats of enamel paint (can is fine) - using a toaster oven, at about 100 degrees, bake for half an hour - let cool, and cure for 2 days - spray with several coats of clear coat (rustoleum clear coats do fine). - sand with fine, fine paper, (DONT go all the way through the clear) - buff throughly, for that SHINE! - GOOD LUCK! *********************************************************** Where to buy: All of these items are readily available at SmallBear Electronics. I recommend them for stompbox parts. The service is great, they are very knowledgeable, and the prices are great. www.smallbearelec.com ***********************************************************
